We test beans under identical conditions and brew each one using 3 different methods (drip, pour over, and French press) to ensure consistency in testing.

a note about pre-ground coffee

If you’re someone who prefers to buy pre-ground coffee, you might want to consider changing your habits.

There are several reasons to consider switching to whole beans instead of buying pre-ground coffee.

Unless you’re shopping for coffee beans for a busy office, retail environment, or a large family of avid coffee drinkers, it’s probably going to take you a little while to finish that two-pound bag of Costco coffee beans.

Actually, it’s quite simple. If your beans came in a foil bag with a one-way air filter (let’s vent out but not in) like most of Costco’s best coffee, leave it there .

simply seal the bag with a couple of clips and store it in a cool, dark place away from any heat source.

If your coffee came in a paper bag, transfer it to an opaque airtight container and then store in a cool, dark place.

We particularly like this iced coffee mix because of its rich, complex flavor, but found it also made a pretty epic cold brew.

If you have an espresso machine or a moka pot, we highly recommend preparing espresso with these coffee beans as well.

best value for money: jose’s organic mayan coffee blend

Jose’s Organic Mayan Coffee Blend is an exceptional value and should not be overlooked.

This medium-dark roast is subtle, with chocolate tones and an almost floral aroma reminiscent of a light roast.

At $8.99 for a 2.5-pound bag of certified organic coffee beans, it’s a bargain if you ask us. this is hands down the best costco coffee for the money.

This roast performed well in all of our tests, but we like this Costco coffee brewed using the pour over or french press methods better.

We find some subtle nuances and muted flavors when brewed with a traditional drip coffee maker.

Best Dark Roast – Jose’s Organic French Roast

jose’s organic french roast is for you if you are a fan of dark roasts. this roast is an almost perfect example of what dark roasts are meant to be.

This French roast is rich, full-bodied and layered with caramel and dark chocolate notes.

It has a smooth, lingering finish without the harsh or bitter taste that many people associate with French roasts (including us).

loved this roast when it was brewed in our french press (appropriately) and found it made a pretty terrific espresso too.

despite its modestly vague name and packaging, we love kirkland organic whole bean blend. don’t let that fool you.

(costco’s inside secret: any kirkland branded product is usually a lower priced “generic” version of a high value item. aka, it’s a quality product at a great price, and this kirkland coffee is no exception. .)

This Kirkland coffee is a high quality blend of special grade Central and South American organic coffee beans grown at higher altitudes strong> and slowly matured.

This cultivation technique, combined with the small batch roasting process, results in an exceptionally balanced refined and complex flavor.

This is a versatile medium roast that is sure to please most palates.

This roast performed exceptionally well across all brewing methods. we buy this bag of kirkland coffee every time we find it at costco because it is a solid value and very versatile for everyday brewing.

best light roast – organic mayorga costa rica las lajas

the mayorga organic costa rica is a single origin coffee bean from the las lajas estate in costa rica. While this particular bean isn’t always available, we’d be remiss to omit it from our selections for the best Costco coffee.

if you see this costco coffee online or in store, we suggest you buy it right away because it comes and goes (like many of our favorite costco items, but we digress)

Las Lajas Farm is one of the few certified organic coffee farms in Costa Rica and is family owned and operated with a commitment to the environment.

This farmer-direct coffee is exceptionally smooth with fruity, almost tropical notes. it’s a beautiful light roast, perfect for various brewing methods.

We particularly enjoyed this roast as a pour over and found the sweetness to be quite unique and exciting. We also recommend trying this roast as a cold brew.
