koa coffee has grown from its humble roots to become one of the biggest names in gourmet coffee. Koa started out as a small backyard business for Marin Artukovich, who saw his small business grow exponentially each year. Koa has won numerous coffee cupping awards, including first prize in the 2002 Gevalia competition. It was also named America’s Best Coffee in 2001 by Forbes magazine.
The plantation also uses state-of-the-art coffee processing equipment. It has an ecological wet benefit processing unit imported from Colombia and a dry benefit unit from Brazil.

Koa coffees are exceptionally smooth and full-bodied, with no bitter aftertaste. when I tasted the coffee, I didn’t think to pour a second cup after the first one went down so well. it is this smoothness that makes koa coffee the ideal after dinner coffee for your guests.

blue horse is the standout of the farm-direct small pea coffees I’ve tried. I’ve found that small farms tend to have more intimate coffee processing methods that bring more flavor to your cup: All Blue Horse coffee is hand-picked, wet-processed, and sun-dried. Smaller Kona farms, as long as they use the high-quality Kona Typica tree to grow their coffee (beware: some don’t) tend to produce exceptional coffee.

The first thing you’ll notice is the sweet scent. he reminded me of Belgian milk chocolate. the first sip will give you a nice tartness as the milk chocolate flavor gives way to citrus notes. a very crisp coffee that pairs well with fruit (especially blueberries).

joel cooperson was a school teacher who grew coffee and sold it at the local walmart in kona. After demand grew, he converted his 2-acre parcel into a massive 150-acre coffee farm with his coffee sold throughout North America. Joel’s exponential growth didn’t affect the flavor of his coffee (thankfully), and he’s one of my favorites when it comes to the great Kona coffee farms.
flavor:
while other peaberry coffees tend to have a pronounced acidity, hualai estate peaberry’s defining characteristic is its slightly spicy flavor. Combined with a silky-smooth finish, this coffee is a robust early afternoon drink. It is also a good pairing with pumpkin and/or gingerbread cookies.

most people outside of the big island have never heard of the kona brothers, and that’s a shame. The Kona Brothers started out as a small coffee shop and roastery in the Kona Public Market. they now have locations all over the big island. With a large, crisp package that seals in freshness, the Kona Brothers offer excellent quality coffee.
flavor:
I noticed that their coffees tend to be roasted a little darker than typical kona coffee. not even close to starbucks dark, mind you, just a little darker than average. the result is more of a caramel sweetness in your coffee. I usually enjoy medium roast coffees, but for the Kona Brothers I found their dark roast to be smooth, flavorful and lovely.

kona joe uses an unusual technique to grow her coffee: a trellis. Inspired by techniques used in wine vineyards, coffee trees are made to grow horizontally, giving the trees a more balanced sun exposure. the sun-dried coffee has been recognized with a scaa blue ribbon award. trellis technology is also patented by kona joe, so no other coffee farm has a coffee like it.

I first noticed a sweet chocolate aroma, followed by nutty notes followed by a subtle lemon aftertaste.
