summary of our favorite brands in 2022

the 10 best Mexican coffee brands

1. organic mexican volcanica — best overall

volcanica’s Mexican coffee is our overall favorite Mexican coffee. it is certified organic and fair trade, as well as being an exceptionally tasty bean.

We like that it adds the nuttiness of the hazelnut to an already complex mix of roasted beans and unusual flavors. it’s an interesting twist. the coffee is delicious on its own, and the difference between adding hazelnut at the beginning of the preparation and later in a flavored creamer is remarkable.

This coffee is available in three convenient grind sizes, but you can also choose whole beans. we prefer whole beans because it is a more versatile purchase. you can grind them to suit your preferred method of preparation. they also retain their potency longer than packaged pre-ground coffee. but if you don’t have a grinder, you’ll appreciate the convenience of this delicious coffee.

Overall, this is the best Mexican coffee we’ve had all year. See what you think and tell us!

2. new mexico piñon coffee

New Mexico Piñon Coffee

secondly, we have mexican coffee beans from new mexico. new mexico piñon coffee has those hints of cinnamon spice and chocolate that make it a great mexican coffee. those notes give it a superior, exotic flavor that pairs particularly well with a medium roast.

The company used to flavor its coffee with pine nuts, but discontinued due to shortages. that might make all the difference if you’re a longtime customer used to that extra flavor, but if you’re new to Mexican coffee, you’ll never miss what you never had.

3. organic decaf direct roasted mexican city coffee bean – best decaf

Coffee Bean Direct

decaf swp organic mexican city roast gets our thumbs up for top choice decaf because it’s a top-tier coffee that surprisingly won’t break the bank.

There are two realities in decaf coffee. because the decaf process involves heating the same beans twice, and usually with chemicals, it often has a light flavor and intense bitterness. This one uses premium Swiss water processing to filter out the caffeine without using chemicals, so it’s smooth and without bitterness. it’s also pretty strong for a decaf.

Another downside to cutting out caffeine is that the flavor can sometimes be inconsistent. that is the case with this variety. if you’re buying a specialty coffee like Mexican, you want consistent results. unfortunately, this coffee can vary.

4. pot coffee mexican ground coffee — the best ground coffee

Cafe De Olla The Authentic Mexican Ground Coffee

When it comes to great Mexican coffee, pot coffee is the real deal. Of all the coffees we reviewed, this one stood out as the tastiest, and it’s conveniently available pre-ground. however, it’s a bit too expensive to rank higher on our list.

gets the right flavor and texture. is a complex blend of spices and medium roast coffee. it’s not just a drink that works in several different layers and lacks the bitterness associated with dark roasts.

however, it’s expensive enough that it’s probably off limits for everyday drinking, unless you normally spend loads of money on coffee. it also comes ground, so it won’t stay fresh for long.

5. Antony’s Organic Mexican Tall Arabica Coffee Beans

Anthonys Organic Whole Bean

anthony’s organic whole bean coffee is not, strictly speaking, mexican coffee. yes, the beans are grown in mexico, so it’s mexican coffee. it’s just not a flavored Mexican coffee.

many of our other coffees already had the spices and sugars mixed in. for this one, you will have to do it yourself after preparing it. it’s our fifth choice simply because of that.

Otherwise, this is a great coffee and a great base for Mexican coffee. we like that it comes whole grain rather than ground, so you can grind it yourself based on your preferred brewing method. it also has a good price.

6. organic mexican dark coffee lacquers

we think of lacas coffee company’s mexican dark decaf as a decaf version of anthony’s organic coffee beans. It tastes great and sets a great tone if you want to make it into a Mexican coffee drink, but you have to add the cinnamon and sugar during the brewing process yourself.

This coffee has great flavors, with hints of cherry and chocolate. add a little cinnamon and sugar while you heat it and you will have a great Mexican coffee. so if you don’t mind doing a bit of work, we can recommend it.

We note that it’s a decaf, which we reject only because most people don’t drink it. it’s also somewhat pricey compared to some of the other cafes we reviewed.

7. fresh roasted organic mexican coffee chiapas

Fresh Roasted Coffee LLC

freshly roasted organic dark mexican chiapas coffee needs a bit of sugar to make it a proper mexican coffee. so it needs a bit more sugar to cut its sour taste. It’s also more expensive than you’d like, even though this coffee is certified organic.

once you get past all that, though, you have a coffee you can call Mexican coffee. it’s bold and dark with some hints of chocolate and spice. we like that it’s sold whole grain, so it’ll stay fresh longer, though the five-pound bag might be too big. unfortunately, the flavors are not very complex and there is some bitterness.

8. dancing moon organic mexican chiapas coffee

In a crowded market, you can expect some products that could have delivered great results compared to the rest to simply fall by the wayside. That’s the fate of Dancing Moon Dark Roast Whole Bean Coffee.

One thing we like is that, for a dark roast, it’s smooth. dark roasts have a reputation for being robust and direct coffees. this one slips we also like that this particular product is a whole grain. that means you are in control of how finely it is ground.

You’re paying for that versatility. within the field, it is expensive compared to other beers. however, when it comes to flavor, it doesn’t stand out. that makes it suboptimal.

9. van houtte coffee-mexican

Van Houtte

keurig coffee makers are a popular specialty for making coffee. Because you’ll need a K-cup compatible machine to brew this coffee, we rank it a bit lower than the more versatile options above. however, the green mountain van houtte mexican coffee k-cup is quite tasty.

It tastes great and comes together quickly without a lot of work. but it’s still a k cup. is it worth buying a keurig coffee maker just to do this? you’re better off spending a little extra money on a decent bag of ground coffee and putting in a little effort. these k-cups are also not very eco-friendly and have a reputation for poor seals.

10. cafe bustelo instant coffee mexican style

Café Bustelo Mexican Style Instant Coffee

Our least favorite option is Cafe Bustelo’s Mexican-style instant coffee. it’s quick and convenient, but the flavors are very limited and you won’t find much body or mouthfeel. Instant coffee can be delicious when you’re camping or traveling, but you can’t beat the complex flavors and aromas of freshly ground coffee beans.

We also found this cafe unexpectedly expensive. It’s close to Mexican coffee, but for the money, you can do better.

Check out our guide to making the best cup of bustelo coffee possible.

buyer’s guide – finding the best brand of Mexican coffee

Don’t know where to start? We put together this buyer’s guide full of tips and advice so you can find the best brand of Mexican coffee for you.

roasted

The best Mexican coffees tend to be medium roasts. that’s a good landing place between robust dark and complex light. sugar and spices best complement a medium roast, rounding out the flavor and producing a delicious, smooth cup of coffee.

If you’re looking for something marketed as Mexican coffee that isn’t medium roast, you might want to think twice.

flavor profile

What makes Mexican coffee is the complex blend of mild, medium roast coffee and spices. Mexican coffee is usually associated with brewing coffee with cinnamon and sugar along with the beans, but some of the best coffees have included a few other flavors like hazelnut to enhance its complexity. those are sublime coffees worth savoring.

When shopping for Mexican coffee, make sure you’re not just buying Mexican-grown coffee beans. look for those that incorporate the complex flavors of Mexican coffee.

beans vs ground beans

In our experience, pre-ground coffee lends itself better to achieving those flavor notes. That’s because the flavor isn’t held in the beans themselves, but is added after the grinding process. pre-ground coffee comes with the ones that are mixed with the coffee.

However, we prefer to buy beans. the beans can be flavored before you buy them, so they will have those complexities present when you grind them. the big advantage, however, is that the beans are easier to keep fresh longer. we tend to think of Mexican coffee as an occasional treat. you may drink coffee every day in the morning, but you will have a flavored coffee when you have the opportunity to enjoy it.

preparation method

Unlike other specialty coffees, you can find good Mexican coffee options in a variety of brewing methods. pre-ground coffees are meant for regular drip coffee makers, but if you can get your hands on beans, it’s possible to get good Mexican coffee out of any brewing system. just remember that coffee made with boiling water will likely be a bit more bitter than coffee made with hot water alone.

price

Mexican coffee is something of a specialty drink, so don’t buy it cheap. If you’re on a tight budget that won’t allow you to spend a bit more, consider finding or making a cinnamon-sugar syrup to add to regular medium-roast coffee to mimic the flavor profile of Mexican coffee.

some decent strains don’t cost too much money. Figure out how often you’ll want Mexican coffee, how much is in your budget, and then put the two together. that should help you decide on a purchase.

conclusion

what is the end result? Volcanica’s Mexican coffee was our choice for the best Mexican coffee for its rich and complex flavor. New Mexico Piñon Coffee may no longer taste like Piñon, but it still ranks high in our reviews of the best Mexican coffees. it does everything right, but it costs enough to make it an expensive habit. decaf swp organic mexican city roast earned our nod as best decaf mexican coffee for offering a combination of flavor, value, and chemical-free processing, though flavor results may be inconsistent.

Sweet, spicy, and chocolate-flavored Mexican coffee is an afternoon treat or morning snack. But finding the right beans can be tricky, so we hope this list of the top 10 brands, complete with detailed reviews and a quick buyer’s guide, will help you shop. your new favorite coffee beans await!
