keto at starbucks
When starting your ketogenic journey, you probably thought you had to give up starbucks, right? well, that might not be the case.
I’m here to tell you that it’s absolutely possible to stick to your ketogenic diet and order keto drinks from starbucks.
In fact, there are so many options on the menu that you can go low carb and have an amazing experience with starbucks keto drinks.
All you have to do is make a few simple substitutions and I’ll tell you exactly what to do for each of these starbucks keto drinks.
starbucks keto pro tips
my favorite thing about ordering at starbucks is that the drinks can be infinitely customized. And it’s also the reason you can make so many starbucks keto drinks there low carb and keto
That said, knowing what to order and what not to order can help you make your starbucks keto drinks as low carb as possible.
So, here are five pro tips for ordering keto at starbucks.
1. omit the whipped cream
yes, the whipped cream at starbucks is full of fat, but it’s also full of sugar and carbs. so you’ll definitely want to avoid it.
2. remember that skinny drinks are not keto drinks
many people make the mistake of thinking that skinny drinks are low carb keto drinks. however, the only thing “skinny” means at starbucks is that the drinks are made with skim milk and sugar-free syrup.
Not to mention that most starbucks skinny drinks have 20 grams of carbs, or more, each!
so you’ll want to avoid ordering these drinks there.
3. use heavy cream or almond milk
These are the lowest carb milk options available at Starbucks.
Both of these options have about 5 grams of carbs per cup. but that’s much lower than all the other options on the starbucks menu.
4. sugar-free does not mean carbohydrate-free
Many people think that sugar-free syrups do not contain carbohydrates. unfortunately, they are not.
the sf syrups at starbucks are actually made with a very small amount of maltodextrin, which is another word for sugar.
That said, each pump of Starbucks Sugar Free Syrup has about 1 gram of carbs. so you’ll want to be very specific about how much syrup you want in your drink.
By the way, don’t worry about adding a little sugar-free syrup to your drinks. It won’t be enough to kick you out of ketosis, especially if you use the amounts I suggest in the drinks below!
5. skip the sweetener packets that starbucks has
Starbucks offers several different sweetener packets in its stores.
However, neither of these are especially good for the ketogenic diet.
The stevia in the raw packets is mostly dextrose with a dash of stevia, and the splenda packets are mostly dextrose with a dash of sucralose. what this means is that these packets basically contain 1 gram of carbohydrates and sugar.
That said, if you use just a pack, or two, you’ll probably be fine with keeping most of your starbucks keto orders.
But, if you’re the type of person who likes to add 4, 5, or even 6 packets of sweetener to your Starbucks drinks, I highly recommend using your own keto sweetener.
6. bring your own sweetener
In fact, I just keep a bunch of these whole earth packs in my car, so I can add them to my starbucks keto drink orders whenever I need to, since they have no net carbs!
And, yes, I know the back of the package says 1 carb, but that’s solely because of how the FDA makes companies list the nutritional information for sugar alcohols on packages.
Sure, it’s confusing. But know that there are no real carbs in a packet of Whole Earth’s Erythritol, Monk Fruit, and Stevia Blend.
However, the same cannot be said for sweet’n low, splenda or raw stevia: they all contain some form of sugar. usually in the form of maltodextrin, dextrose, or both.
