It’s no wonder uber-cool Los Angeles has one of the best specialty coffee scenes in all of America. But with so many options, it’s hard to know who the best coffee roasters are.

In no particular order, we’ve put together a list of our seven favorite coffee roasters that roast the best coffee beans in Los Angeles. We’ve provided a little background on each roaster along with what they have to offer this year.

alana

Alana Coffee Roasters was founded in 2017 by Eric Stogsdill and Erin Ward. stogsdill has over ten years of coffee experience, beginning as a home roaster selling his coffee at farmer’s markets in los angeles. Ward is equally passionate about coffee and has helped raise the capital and people needed to open the cafe.

alana’s coffee is meticulously roasted on site in small batches. Their coffee is sustainably grown and responsibly sourced, and they import it directly from several of their farmers. alana’s is a cozy and beautifully decorated space, where customers can enjoy good company and entertainment, and even better coffee.

located at 12511 venice boulevard, alana’s is a community-focused coffee shop. they provide a space for local creatives, professionals, and families to relax and socialize over a cup of coffee, and in the summer they host movie nights, karaoke, open mics, and other community events.

on alana’s website, you will find a good variety of coffee from the main coffee producing continents that are located along the coffee belt: latin america, africa and asia.

Prices start at $20 for a 1-pound bag of coffee that comes whole bean or ground. there’s a selection of blends, single origins, and a decaf coffee for those who prefer a coffee with lower levels of caffeine, and there’s also a French roast for dark roast lovers.

delicacy

demitasse is a chain of coffee shops and coffee roasters opened in 2011. founder and owner bobak “bobby” roshan transitioned into the coffee business after working in politics and law, and has had considerable success in your new field.

demitasse trades directly with its farmers in Central and South America, and works with responsible and reliable importers to source coffees from Africa and Southeast Asia.

Currently operating three locations, demitasse coffee is also served and sold in a growing number of cafes, restaurants, and markets around Los Angeles.

its first location is in little tokyo, at 135 san pedro street. the second is in santa monica, at 1149 3rd street. its newest location is in hollywood at 6363 wilshire boulevard.

the cafeteria offers a menu of seasonal gourmet food and excellent local wines and beers. It also has a probat roaster on display, where demitasse roasts its coffee twice a week.

the demitasse website stocks a small variety of coffees including several different blends, single origins, and decaf. the team has even developed a special blend to prepare delicious cold coffee.

knowledgeable

cognoscenti started in 2009 as a pop-up store, operating as a test bakery and ice cream. In 2012, founder Yeekai Lim partnered with Proof Na Young Ma’s founder to open the first traditional Cognoscenti location in Culver City.

Since then, they have opened two more locations at 868 south olive street and a roastery and cafe at 1118 san julian street, both in downtown los angeles. cognoscenti is not only a successful business, but one of the few minority-owned specialty coffee roasters in Los Angeles.

cognoscenti roasts single-origin coffees, sourced responsibly and sustainably from major coffee-producing countries such as costa rica, colombia, ethiopia, kenya and rwanda.

Their coffees are sold on their website and are also served and sold at any of their three locations. Online prices start at $20 for a 12-oz bag of whole bean coffee only, so make sure you have a good grinder. if you feel like you can’t decide, opt for a bag of the staff favorite to ensure you get the most delicious and interesting coffee available that week.

laminator

lamill was one of the first specialty coffee roasters to open in los angeles. Having started in the mid-1990s, the company’s current incarnation was born in 1999, when owner Craig Min took over the company from his father and renamed it.

There are currently two coffee shops in operation, one at 1636 silver lake boulevard and the other at the los angeles airport. Their coffee is also sold or served at more than 300 locations in the United States, as well as several other countries around the world.

lamill offers an impressive variety of coffees on their website. These include a wide variety of blends and unique origins from Latin America and Africa. the blends even include some developed for use with drip coffee makers.

The company also partnered with macerated coffee to produce specialty quality individual coffee bags. these work the same way as tea bags, which is great for sheer convenience.

Prices start at $14 for a 12 oz bag of coffee that is available whole bean or ground. something we really like is the discounted subscription service that starts from $13.50. Very often, roasters charge a premium for their subscriptions, which seems like an odd way to deal with loyal customers.

The service is one of the most flexible on our list, with all coffees available to purchase via subscription. simply select the number of bags you want to receive and if you prefer them weekly, bi-weekly, quarterly or four-weekly.

portola

portola is an award-winning chain of coffee shops and specialty coffee roasters established in 2011. it is co-owned by husband and wife jeff and christa duggan.

Jeff Duggan, a scientist with a background in math and chemistry, oversees the roasting of the portola to ensure superior quality and consistency. Portola currently operates six locations in the greater Los Angeles area.

portola takes great care not only in the roasting of its coffee but also in its supply. they pride themselves on being direct trade only, cultivating personal relationships with their farmers.

Commit to paying a minimum of 25% above fair trade prices, and often go above that to pay an additional 50% to ensure quality and sustainability. They offer a number of blends and single origins from South America and Africa, available on their website and in any of their stores.

Prices start at $15.95 for a 12-ounce bag of coffee beans. Portola also offers a subscription service so you can receive biweekly or monthly coffee. simply select your frequency and preferred coffee option, and coffee will be delivered to your doorstep.

go for the tiger

go get em tiger (gget) developed from g&b coffee, a downtown los angeles coffee shop owned by charles babinski and kyle glanville. the two co-owners have a long history in the coffee trade. They have worked for some of the biggest names in the industry and each hold a US Barista Championship title. uu.

gget started out as a “multi-roaster”, serving and selling coffees from multiple third-party roasters. however, they soon outgrew their roasters and, in 2018, began roasting their own coffee. Roasting now takes place at their 16,000-square-foot facility and headquarters in Vernon, using both a Mill City roaster and a Probat roaster.

the duo have enjoyed incredible success. Currently operating a total of ten locations in the Los Angeles area.

gget offers a variety of coffees depending on the season. currently single origin wines from colombia, peru and ethiopia are offered, as well as a blend and a decaf. they can be bought online, at g&b or at any of the gget cafes.

gget coffee prices start at $17.50 for a 12-ounce bag of coffee beans. the company also offers a subscription service called @home club.

You can select up to four bags of coffee to be delivered weekly, bi-weekly or every four weeks. And if you ever run out of water, just text or email for an extra dose.

measure nine

bar nine is a specialty coffee roaster, retailer and coffee shop. They opened their roastery in 2013 and their coffee shop a year later in 2014. Both the roastery and coffee shop operate at 3515 Helms Avenue in Culver City.

bar nine is co-owned by zayde naquib, who has many years of coffee and retail experience, along with jereme pitts, a community-minded entrepreneur.

In addition to its commitment to great coffee and customer experience, bar nine also strives to operate on a green and sustainable model. Some ways they do this include using solar power, using recyclable bags for their retail and wholesale products, and implementing a take-out glass jar program.

While the covid-19 outbreak lasts, bar nine offers a smaller selection of coffee, which is available online or in their coffee shop. this includes two house blends, a decaf and a mystery blend. they also sell frozen drinks by the 1/2 gallon and 64 oz lattes, available for pickup only.

Prices on the website start at $14 for an 8.8 oz (250 g) bag of coffee that comes whole bean or ground.
