we are a locally owned coffee shop and coffee shop conveniently located in downtown munising; a perfect location for both travelers and residents. we offer free wireless internet, home cooked food with vegan and gluten free options, custom roasted coffee and gourmet tea, and yes, we have delicious jilbert milk ice cream!

We are Great Lakes Coffee Company, housed in the Falling Rock Café and Bookstore. We found that our coffee is inherently what connects people to our café, so we created Great Lakes Coffee Company with the goal of bringing the finest, freshest coffees from around the world to our customers. We are not a franchise; we are unique and owned and operated by Nancy and Jeff Dwyer, with a fantastic manager and team of employees.

With names that reflect our local area, all of our Great Lakes Coffee Company’s coffees have been chosen as a favorite at one time or another by each of our customers. but overall, great island barbecue consistently remains at the top of the list. a strong, dark roast with just the right amount of bitterness, we serve 5 times more of the big island roast than any of our other names.

Munising Morning, which is lighter and slightly milder, comes in second with Superior Lake Blend just behind (bolder and more adventurous than Munising Morning, but less dry and tart than Grand Island Roast). a close third is the fruity michigan cherry. Derided by “real” coffee roasters as too sweet and flowery, it is wildly popular with both locals and tourists drawn to it for its true Michigan origin. roasted with the flavoring, instead of just mixing the flavor with the beans, our roaster has created a product that has taken on a life of its own!

live music & events

Live music in the upper peninsula has become a regular occurrence at the Falling Rock as talented performers fill our café with eclectic music every Saturday throughout the month. Shows start at 7p and feature the best of the Upper Peninsula music scene. Special events for children, book lovers, and artists are also regularly featured.

The cafe is also home to the Open Acoustic Jam on the first and third Wednesday of each month, and the Early Music Jam and Game Night on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Bring your guitar, your voice, and that new song you’ve been working on, or just listen and enjoy the local flavor!
