It also works with local businesses, from bakeries to breweries, to make coffee-flavored products. Lauters has put together a menu that includes coffee, red eyes (espresso and coffee), lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, mixed drinks, and cold brew that has been dubbed “liquid crack.” good pastries, breakfast items, sandwiches and salads also available.

The couple chose the perfect downtown location when they opened here a few years ago, under the Palm Avenue parking lot and next to Kojo. It’s always packed with customers, from condo residents and office workers to employees of nearby arts organizations. they’re lounging on sidewalk seats and lining up for strong coffee (ask for it black to savor the fruity tartness), creamy lattes, and sweets like affogatos, and iced sodas.

6530 gateway ave., sarasota, (941) 447-8383, theclevercup.com located in a small shop on gulf gate, the smart cup exudes a cheerful and warm atmosphere, with a scattering of tables and chairs out front, a vintage style sofa in the back and interesting art on the walls. the coffee lineup includes americanos, lattes, lattes, lattes and more, and the baristas will prepare anything you ask for. good dairy drinks with seasonal flavors, like the cinnamon and rice infused latte we enjoy around the holidays. it all comes in giant cups – they don’t skimp on the good stuff.

Tamiami Trail, Osprey, (941) 932-8388; KahwaCoffee.com Another popular Tampa Bay chain, Kahwa has a handful of locations in the area. the name is a twist of the Arabic word for coffee (“qawha”). specializes in unique blends of single-origin beans from countries around the world, and the menu offers the usual lineup, including cappuccinos, lattes, macchiatos, Americanos, and more. the space has an industrial-chic vibe (concrete floors with minimal decorations) and shaded outdoor seating. the nitro cold brew is the best in the region.

1316 main st., sarasota, (941) 552-8659, oandacoffee.comjustin banister built a large local following with his out and about coffee mobile coffee cart, which sits on street corners and in farmers markets and private events. expanded on that success by opening o & a coffee and supply, a stylish high street venue serving all manner of espresso drinks, cold beers, pour overs and teas. A basic pour here is one of the best in the area. the store usually offers a choice of their basic bean mix or a more adventurous option. we suggest the latter. on one visit, we were told our coffee would taste like a green apple jolly rancher, and it turned out to be spot on. unusual and unusually delicious.

1512 main st., sarasota, (941) 955-7545, pastryartbakerycafe.compastry art buzzes from open to close, thanks to its strong coffee (an iced coffee had us buzzing at our desks all afternoon), location Centrally located and ample outdoor seating that is perfect for people watching, especially during the Saturday Farmers Market. in its letter are iced and hot coffees; hot, iced and frozen espresso drinks; specialty sips like a dirty chai (chai tea with a shot of espresso); and the popular American ice creams. this place has the widest selection of cakes of any local cafe, all homemade and well worth indulging in. the giant chocolate chip-laden espresso muffin packs a punch and is the perfect partner for that iced coffee.

1821 hillview st., sarasota, (941) 955-8101, perqcoffeebar.uskeith and erin zolner brought coffee concoctions like flat white and gibraltars to sarasota when they opened their store on the south side in 2013. from the beginning, they made it is their mission to educate the locals about the art and science of coffee. they are rigorous with the details: the beans are fair trade and single origin; the bright green Slayer espresso machine is Instagrammable; and beverages are manufactured and measured to exact specifications. you can savor your drink on one of the elegant black leather sofas or at an industrial-style wooden table.

Owners Jessica Simmons and Kim Cressell have turned them into airy, light-filled, multi-purpose spaces where you can grab a great cuppa, along with homemade cakes, sandwiches, and more. the reserve menu includes cold beer, lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos and more, with regular or alternative milks, plus kombucha on tap, wine and local craft beer. grab your coffee and pastry and head to one of the outdoor tables when the weather is nice.
