How many of you have seen those DIY marker painted mugs all over pinterest? where people take basic sharpie markers and paint dollar store pottery with them? is such a popular gift idea right now, especially around the holidays!
These coffee mug tutorials usually just say to write on your mugs with some regular sharpie markers, bake in the oven, and voila. It is the ideal way to get a personalized gift without spending a lot of money.
but how many of you know that regular sharpie marker designs actually go in the dishwasher? Yes! I’m so sorry to disappoint you with that statement, but unless you’re carefully hand-washing those handmade coffee mugs, your artistic masterpieces will likely go down the drain, along with all that ink.
even hand washing will likely cause the design to fade over time. It’s actually a very flawed concept that has taken over the internet!

but don’t worry! after some research, i discovered the DIY Marker Cup Hack that really works. oil-based paint pens to the rescue!
sharpie also makes these types of oil-based paint markers and your local craft store will likely have them in stock. i picked mine up in the home depot paint aisle, a few months ago. they’re a bit more expensive than a regular sharpie, but if you weigh the pros {set doesn’t waste time going down the drain} then it’s probably worth it. invest in the right pens and grab your dollar tree mugs 😉 plus i’m sharing a really cute way to monogram those boring mugs. can we say stellar christmas presents this year?

- simple white mugs – one per DIY Christmas mug craft {found mine for each for $1 at dollar tree}
- oil-based paint sharpie pens
- letter stickers for scrapbooking
- electric oven
- isopropyl alcohol
- several swabs
- To make a monogram design, you’ll need some letter scrapbooking stickers. choose the monogram/design you want and stick it on your mug. I made a “g” for our last name.
- you’ll want to make sure it’s in the right place/angle etc. and as flat as possible in the cup. no rim should be raised on the cup.
- then you’ll want to dot around the scrapbook tag. follow the directions on the marker packaging to get the paint working. Practice a few dots on cardboard beforehand so you know how much pressure to apply.
- once you’re ready, start filling in the area around the label with tons of dots. actually fill in the area so that no whitespace is shown.
- add a second color {or a few more} if you like on top of your first round of dots. by the way, if you mess up your design, just wipe it off with a little rubbing alcohol on a paper towel.
- once you have the design you want on the mug and it’s dry enough, carefully peel back the scrapbook sticker to reveal your design underneath.
- do more touch-ups with markers and if necessary use a little isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab for small stains.
- Next, the baking step. make sure your area is well ventilated and turn your oven on to 350.
- Place your cups in the oven, on the rack and let them bake for about 30 minutes.
- Once the 30 minutes are up, turn off the oven and allow the mugs to cool in the oven. I left mine in the oven for a few hours.
- When it’s done, remove it from the oven.
- wash then of course fill and enjoy with your favorite beverage to enjoy.
FYI, if you can’t find a sticker like the one I used in my post, you can always invest in a cricut maker machine and cut it that way 🙂
