To be honest, there aren’t many single-serve coffee makers out there that don’t use pods, but below are some of the best ones I’ve used and some that were recommended to me.
Unlike a lot of those other coffee maker review websites, I only recommend coffee makers that won’t let you down and have been tried and tested.
If they’re not up to the job, I just won’t recommend them.

The first recommendation for the best single-serving coffee maker without a single-serving unit is the touch brewer t526s preparation system.
I’ll start by saying that this isn’t the cheapest coffee maker in its class, but I’ve been told it’s worth the extra cost.
for just under $200 (at the time of this writing), you’re getting great “value for money” (in my opinion); let’s take a closer look.
first thumbs up with the t526s touch coffee maker is that it only takes 1 minute to brew a cup of coffee from start to finish (pretty impressive).

plus it only takes about 30 seconds to heat cold water to the optimal temperature of 195 and 205 degrees fahrenheit, yes, just 30 seconds…no kidding!
compared to other single cup coffee makers without pods, the touch brewer t526s brewing system has a large 90 ounce water tank, this is a great size and you will refill it less often; in fact, you can fill it and your set for a few days.
the t526s touch coffee maker also supports coffee pods if you want to use them, but you’re not tied to your brand and any cheap coffee pod will work.
If you don’t want to use coffee pods, no problem. simply use freshly ground coffee in the empty pod that ships with the system (the t526s touch brewer comes with a cup-like device for placing freshly ground coffee).

A friend of mine recommended the Hamilton Beach single scoop coffee maker to me when I was researching information while writing this article (hat-tip james).
The good news is that this single-cup coffeemaker without pods is cheap. Priced at just under $50 (at the time of writing), you’ll be hard-pressed to find a coffee maker for the same price in this class, and it’s even cheaper than the previous touch coffee maker.
so if you want an affordable personal coffee maker without pods, this could be a great option. let’s take a closer look.
The first thing you’ll notice about the Hamilton Beach Single Serve Coffeemaker is its compact size. it’s small enough to fit in the smallest of kitchens, and can even sit comfortably in the corner of an office.
what I like about the hamilton beach single serve is the fact that it can be made in any regular mug or even an insulated travel mug. It doesn’t even matter what size your coffee mug is because the adjustable cup holder can be configured to fit any shape or size (it moves up or down to fit almost any size, within reason, obviously).
Because this coffeemaker doesn’t use pods, you can add your favorite brand of pre-ground coffee in a single scoop filter.
so no need to use coffee pods or k-cups, but you do have the option of using pods if you want the best of both worlds. great little personal coffee maker, definitely one on my wish list.

my first impression is that it is very similar in appearance to the hamilton beach individual service above. they both look the same and to be honest they have almost the same features and functions.
price almost identical, the bella being a little more expensive. However, with that being said, I think bella brand is, in general, better quality than hamilton beach, but that’s just my opinion.
The stand can be adjusted to fit various sized coffee mugs or insulated travel mugs (just like the Hamilton Beach above), and the Bella 13711 one-scoop, one-cup coffee maker can be used without coffee pods , but you have the option to use pods if you want.
if you intend to use loose ground coffee, the bella comes with its own filter basket that can be washed and reused (looks like a reusable k-cup).
one thing i like about the bella 13711 one scoop is the fact that they have a range of different colors to suit just about every taste not just the smooth brushed silver like the previous hamilton beach for example i have found black, red, purple and turquoise.

The last recommendation on my list of coffee makers without capsules is the breville bdc650bss grind control.
This is a great little coffee maker that even has its own built-in grinder, which holds about 1/2 pound of whole coffee beans, and comes with six different grind settings for lighter or darker roast coffee beans. The Breville Grind Control is also packed with functions and features to keep just about any coffee fanatic happy and entertained.
For starters, it has a bright LCD screen that lets you easily program an auto-start feature to brew at a time of your choosing, perfect for those mornings when you’re walking down the stairs and your coffee is ready and waiting.
You can also adjust the brew size for either a single cup or a full pitcher, which is perfect if you have guests over or if you just need to “wake me up” a bit more after the night before.
what I like about the breville grind control is the fact that you don’t have to grind coffee every time (as other machines force you to do) because you have the option to turn off the grinder completely and use only pre-ground coffee .
with the breville grind control, you can only use coffee, so you can’t use pods or k-cups. that’s good or bad depending on whether you like to make coffee with a capsule from time to time.
Think of the Breville grind control as a miniature version of a large coffee pot with a grinder; it’s perfect for single-cup brewing and smaller kitchen countertops.
