texas may be famous as the home of dallas (city and tv show), the longhorns, george bush and much more, but did you also know that there is an amazing local coffee shop scene in various parts of the state? ? during our recent visit to texas we headed to austin for a conference and after exploring more epic austin street art we headed north to the city of waco to experience not only the iconic market of magnolias in the silos but also the cafeteria scene. If you love coffee, you’ll want to read on as we review the best coffee in Waco, Texas.

Local coffee shops are popping up in just about every destination in the world and certainly for good reason. Not only do they offer locals and visitors the chance to sample the local coffee, but it’s also the perfect place for people to meet, catch up on work, or just socialize with friends and family. Whether you’re a fan of chain stores like starbucks or prefer to hit the local coffee shops, you can be sure that most places you visit will have somewhere you can find that “cup of coffee” perfect. !

Hopefully, after reading this post, you’ll be convinced to head to the vibrant city of Waco and check out some of the most distinctive and unique coffee shops we’ve come across anywhere in the world.

Let’s take a look at Waco’s coffee shop scene and find out why it didn’t take us long to fall in love with the best local spots.

home of dr. pepper museum, the waco mammoth national monument, and of course the various places the iconic repairman from the tv series is associated with, you could be forgiven for thinking that waco is a city with a lot to do. experience without visiting a variety of local coffee shops.

But what better way to stay energized than by visiting a couple of local coffee shops that offer delicious espresso drinks, unique features that make them so aesthetically pleasing, and great places to relax with friends or read your favorite book.

waco has several local coffee shops, and like any other destination, it’s an ever-changing landscape. here are the coffee shops we visited that we consider to be the best in waco.

waco commons

waco is home to baylor college and with that there is a large student population that frequently finds their way to the common ground cafeteria. With two separate locations across the city, Common Grounds is a modern and vibrant cafe offering decadent and creative espresso-infused drinks.

The main location is on south 8th street, just steps from the baylor campus and offers the perfect place to catch up on schoolwork or relax with friends while enjoying the friendly atmosphere and delicious coffee.

head outside through the back to sit on the balcony overlooking a space that has been transformed into a live music stage and amphitheater-style seating all around. Recognized as the “premier music venue in waco”, this is the perfect area to enjoy local musicians while enjoying a variety of drinks and freshly baked pastries.

The infamous “secret sauce” (no one quite knows what goes into this “syrup”, but be sure to ask the locals and I’m sure they’ll give you some ideas) is one of the popular reasons to visit grounds, so be sure to order a drink with this included. I opted for the caramel crunch coffee, but perhaps the legendary cowboy coffee that can only be found on common grounds is too tempting to resist.

before you leave the common grounds, be sure to take a selfie in front of the waco sign at the top of the cafe. this is frequently referred to as one of the best places to take a selfie or just snap a photo of this iconic coffee shop.

if you visit coffee shops with the intention of spending a little time there, one of the best places in waco is the wonderfully named dichotomy coffee & spirits, located in the heart of the historic center. this urban setting offers a “vintage-chic” space with plenty of seating to relax while enjoying one of the perfectly handcrafted drinks.

one of the main benefits of visiting this cafe is that it is combined with a cocktail bar, creating the perfect combination for everyone to enjoy according to their personal preferences.

Whether you’re looking to try the delicious cookie butter latte (a seasonal favorite hands down!) or maybe hit up waco’s premier spot for your favorite cocktail, dichotomy is certainly one. of the best places for all your needs.

The cafeteria side of the dichotomy offers all your traditional favorites, but it’s those seasonal concoctions and the locally inspired drink “1885” that are likely to intrigue you. how does a dr. pepper combined with espresso, served over ice. sound? If that doesn’t sound too appealing, we can assure you that any drink you choose here will be meticulously prepared and you won’t leave disappointed.

the cocktail bar epitomizes everything there is to love about the waco underground with the local menu to reflect it; perhaps the old-fashioned pre-prohibition or the old-fashioned dichotomy piques your interest. Have you ever visited a coffee shop located mainly in an old elevator? we hadn’t either until we experienced the bru craft coffee works just steps from dichotomy coffee & plays.

Who would have thought that an old elevator could be transformed into a coffee shop, creating the perfect space for baristas to create their perfect masterpieces for all coffee and tea drinkers?

Take a moment to think about the setting of a traditional coffee shop before entering the historic Praetorian Building in downtown Waco. The moment you walk in and see the friendly barista waiting to take your order, you’ll realize that any preconceived ideas of a coffee shop are turned upside down at Bru Crafted Coffeeworks.

The hard choice will be deciding what to order because while coffee is a frequent choice here, the wide variety of teas on offer (including seasonal specialties like apple pie flavor!) is likely to be too tempting to resist.

With indoor and outdoor seating available, bru crafted coffeeworks is definitely a place with a very European vibe. but even the most iconic European coffee shops would have a hard time competing with the uniqueness of this place.

It’s one of those places you won’t forget given the distinctive features that make it so appealing (plus the delicious coffee and tea!).

downtown waco is a hub of coffee shops with several located within walking distance. Instead of choosing one, why not visit all three because each one is unique and worth a visit. the next stop on your city center adventure is the cappuccino cafe, which is perhaps the best option if you want to enjoy breakfast or lunch to go with your preferred espresso.

When it comes to extensive latte and cappuccino options, Cappuccino is hands down one of the best in Waco with a plethora of menu options to make your decision incredibly difficult. Whether you have a sweet tooth or just want to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee, Cappuccino has something for everyone.

From a buttery rum latte to a gingerbread seasonal favorite, the list is nearly endless…as is the bottomless coffee mug, which is also an option for visiting traditionalists. . the downtown location is one of three spread across waco (uptown and hewitt neighborhood locations also available).

For those who love the genuine taste of freshly roasted coffee, there aren’t many better places to visit than the Pinewood Coffee Shop located along Austin Avenue in Waco.

Transformed from a former dental office coffee shop, Pinewood may not be the first place you think of visiting for delicious coffee. when you hear that pinewood focuses on two concepts: coffee and hospitality, you quickly realize that this is a coffee shop worth visiting to enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee while enjoying the atmosphere inside this place.

is about creating a family experience in pinewood. everything from the green coffee growers to the local baristas to the customers who visit this place are taken care of in the best way possible by pinewood. no detail is left untouched and this is evident when you walk through the door and admire the quirky yet detailed décor that creates the perfect environment for visitors to enjoy their favorite coffee.

When I say quirky, the arrangement of tables and chairs surrounds the central area of the bar, which is perfectly positioned to ensure that everyone’s attention is on the focal point of this cafe – the bar where all the magic happens for create these delicious drinks. . It’s no surprise that Pinewood Coffee Bar made the list of Best Coffee in Every State 2019 courtesy of food+wine.

The adjacent Pinewood Tavern offers another perfect place to enjoy a coffee and beer at the end of the day. the patio area in the middle is the perfect place to enjoy the best of both worlds.

A visit to Waco wouldn’t be the same without experiencing an area of the city that has evolved in recent years. Thanks to Joanna and Chip Gaines and their infamous TV show, Fixer Upper, Waco is now home to the incredible Magnolia Market and its accompanying venues. In fact, Waco is home to a plethora of locations, all affiliated with the Magnolia brand.

It is fitting that our final recommendation for coffee shops in waco is, of course, associated with magnolia given that joanna gaines has proudly opened the magnolia press coffee shop.

We believe that there is a familiar and valuable pause waiting for us in a good cup of coffee.

with cities like dallas, houston, san antonio and austin, it’s no surprise that waco is often in the shadow of some of these larger destinations in the state of texas. But that shouldn’t take anything away from a location that is growing rapidly, largely due to the impact of the magnolia brand.
