afternoon coffee is a must in new york city. With at least four more hours to go in the workday, it’s the perfect time to unplug from the spreadsheet, get your caffeine fix, and pick a colleague’s brain on potential career changes. In the city center, however, your trusty Starbucks has probably become a tourist haven. Out of town visitors respond to the familiar Starbucks siren song and settle in for lunch, rest and basically leaving no room for the rest of us. Fortunately, I’m not the only New Yorker who feels this way, and our great city has provided some smaller, albeit cooler, venues where you can discuss career strategy with your boss or mentor.

central ground coffee company
calle 52 east 155
You have to know what you’re doing to handle the afternoon rush at ground central. the line was almost out the door when I arrived, but the crew quickly dispatched it. and although the place was busy there were still seats available in the front and even some in the back library, by far the coolest part of the venue with lots of books, tables and a sofa reminiscent of the central “friends” perk. ground central definitely has a rock and roll attitude with an underground new york vibe and a taste for well brewed caffeine.

espresso culture
247 West 36th Street
I was very impressed with the service at culture espresso. while waiting in line the guy in front of me asked if they do ice cream cortados. the barista said they weren’t on the menu but she could make it happen for him. It was a nice touch for a place with a simple menu. culture espresso quickly gets to work. It is small and does not have a bathroom, so camping is not recommended. but the cafe packs a punch, and the side street location makes for a quieter, more enjoyable cafe.

grumpy coffee

the lack of laptops and wi-fi in grumpy cafe was a bit of a shock at first. I wasn’t quite sure how that would work, but you quickly realize how much it encourages you to start a conversation. it makes the space more welcoming for meaningful connections and, of course, keeps clientele moving, so you can rest easy knowing a spot will be available soon, even if the venue is packed. the small cafe is smaller than a tall starbucks, but you don’t need more than that to get you through the day.

fika
114 West 41st Street
Swedish tradition is evident as soon as you enter this deceptively spacious fika. The clean lines, white chairs, and orange accents will remind you of an IKEA showroom, but the best part about this particular location is the proximity to Bryant Park. If it’s one of the few nice days in New York, I would recommend grabbing an iced latte and having a walking meeting during your “fika”, which is actually “coffee break” in Swedish.

espresso frisson
326 West 47th Street
frisson espresso is located on a surprisingly quiet street near times square. It’s a bit further from the hustle and bustle of downtown, but walking there gives you plenty of time to clear your head and focus on what you’re doing right now and what you want to accomplish with this meeting. it’s an intimate place that inspires you to put your phone away and have a conversation that makes a difference. plus, they have a fantastic selection of teas, including a hibiscus tea that I’ll be dreaming about for days.
