5 Best Coffee Grinders Under $200 – Reviews:

1. delonghi america burr coffee grinder: the best option

DeLonghi America KG521

This coffee bean grinder has eighteen grind settings plus three “strength” settings. strength settings determine how many grams of ground coffee go into each cup. Combine that with grind settings for espresso, drip, pour over, and French press, and you’ve got a nearly endless array of settings for every palate. it’s really remarkable.

This machine is beautifully designed, works beautifully, and looks fantastic on the counter. It is elegant and functional with a led screen on top. It has a small footprint, so it’s not a counter hog. leaves plenty of space on the counter for the rest of the kitchen utensils.

it’s so easy to use that you almost don’t need the manual. the “espresso filter holder” accessory is especially popular. you can grind the coffee directly in the espresso filter in one step. likewise, there’s enough room for you to grind it right into a storage jar. Talk about convenience!

occasionally has trouble grinding small enough for espresso, but the removable top grinds can be removed for cleaning, which seems to solve the problem.

2. breville burr coffee grinder – the runner-up

Breville BCG820BSSXL The Smart Grinder Pro

This beautiful machine features sixty grind settings (from the finest to the coarsest) to satisfy the most discerning taste buds. it has conical stainless steel burs that minimize the heat of the grind and preserve the flavor.

Like the top selection, you can grind directly in the portafilter, a grinding bowl, filter basket, or paper basket, whatever you prefer. Electronic timers have 0.2 second increments allowing for very precise grind time settings for your individual taste. Because it’s digital, there are no worries about hitting the machine and losing settings.

The bean hopper is easy to remove and store. grounds are always dispensed downward instead of forward, preventing clogging. if you want to change the grind size and time, the digital display and timer make that process simple as well.

it is very quiet and has a removable magnetic soil tray.

this machine malfunctions when grinding for a french press or moka pot. it also uses a plastic impeller to move the grounds into the collection container. the cheap impeller can wear out too easily, at which point the whole machine is dead until a new impeller can be installed.

3. infinity burr capresso grinder – best for the money

Capresso Infinity conical burr grinder

This machine has a wide range of settings, from ultra-fine Turkish press to coarse French press, which are divided into extra-fine, fine, medium and coarse. The wheels are commercial grade steel with a geared motor that grinds slowly with low noise and minimal static. slow grinding also prevents heat buildup.

despite the wide range of settings, it works best if left in one setting. grounds tend to collect under the nylon collar around the top milling cutter. To change the grit and/or grind settings, you will first need to take it apart and clean it to remove any old grits. Coffee grinders are supposed to be convenient and this process is not.

It looks like the selector knob to choose how much to grind comes from the ford taurus dash. it’s made of cheap plastic that breaks too easily; this is clearly the product of poor engineering.

This is a decent grinder, but the grit retention, need to clean between grind changes, and cheap knob will keep it out of the race for the top two spots. still, for the price, it’s “the best bang for the buck”.

4. baratza encore burr coffee grinder

Baratza Encore

the baratza encore bills itself as “the entry level grinder”. maybe it is, maybe it’s not.

It has forty grind settings (which is respectable), and performs decently at the coarser end of the scale for French press and such. Its construction is completely made of plastic except for the conical stainless steel grinding wheels. seems pretty sturdy at first glance.

However, don’t fill the hopper more than half full with beans or you’ll end up with a clog that will take an hour or more to clear. you have been warned.

adjusting settings is more difficult than necessary and the solid build is an illusion. many parts break, causing jams. When you call customer service, they don’t want to fix a machine “under warranty” but will send you the part so you can fix it yourself. Following their repair instructions leaves scratches, nicks, and dents in the machine. and repairs only work sometimes.

grinds spill out of the basket and perform poorly on fine grinds. along with the other issues we’ve mentioned, this leaves it in fourth place on the list.

5. bodum bistro

Bodum Bistro 10903-01US

This grinder comes in a variety of colors: black, chrome, copper, red, and shiny copper. apparently, this is supposed to make up for having only twelve grind settings. Unfortunately, this is another one of those products that works just fine when it’s working. but most of the time it is not.

The internal gears, which should be metal, are cheap plastic that could break within a few weeks of purchase. What’s worse, Bodum doesn’t sell replacement parts. once these gears break (and they will), you’re left with a useless machine.

Due to its inexpensive plastic construction, it is prone to frequent clogging, which requires disassembling the grinder to clear the clog. this creates a mess of leftover beans that litter the counter when you take it apart. who wants to clean up a mess when they should be drinking coffee?

bodum refuses to honor their warranty if you purchase the grinder from a “third party”. Since most people buy from retailers and other “third parties”, why bother with a warranty?

this is poorly designed and horribly designed, made worse by the fact that the manufacturer shows utter disregard for its customers. whoever needs this will never be in the top two on the list.

buyer’s guide: choosing the best coffee grinder under €200

You’ve read our list of the five best mid-range burr grinders, but have you decided which one to buy? Read on for our quick tips on important features.

consistency

You’ll want a grinder that can accurately and consistently grind your beans into a variety of sizes, from super-fine to extra-coarse. Burr grinders, which crush the coffee beans between the burrs, are the most consistent grinders available. look for models with a variety of easy-to-adjust settings.

durability

If you’re investing in a good grinder, you’ll want it to be sturdy. Weaker plastic gears, chutes, and knobs can quickly fall apart and shorten the life of your grinder. Lesser quality wheels that clog easily can be frustrating and require you to keep an eye on the grinder, even if it has a built-in timer.

accessories

Although a high-quality grinder makes a great stand-alone coffee appliance, you may want to further enhance your coffee experience with helpful accessories like burr brushes to help keep your burrs in good shape. over time, you may also need to purchase replacement burs.
