Brooklynians now have their own 420-fit consumption lounge: Just before Christmas, the Bamboo Cafe opened in a secret location in trendy Williamsburg, ringing in the holidays and signaling hope for the new year with a cheerful and somewhat nostalgic with a contemporary style that makes for a pure and elevated experience.
what’s inside the bamboo cafe?
Decorated in a tiki bar aesthetic accompanied by a soothing reggae and rap soundtrack, the bamboo café welcomes visitors in a loft-style main area. a stage is set up for live music, and the eye is immediately drawn to the far wall, which features a mural of a giant panda (eating bamboo, of course) surrounded by individual pieces of art from the husband-and-wife team lisa, founders of the awakened arts. most of the paintings add cannabis-related thematic twists to classic cartoon characters and mythical figures, although one of the most striking is a forest scene that mixes symbols of life and death.

Further back in the space is a game room and gift shop, with an abundance of colorful accessories stamped with the bamboo label. Bamboo is the latest brand developed by the team behind Taste Treats Co™, a family business started in Washington, D.C. when her owner, a former wall street veteran, wanted to create better cannabis edibles to treat her brother’s epilepsy. “[My fiancé and I] researched and started experimenting with mining and decarbonizing at home,” she said. “First we made tea and brownies, and we realized how much she was helping him. that’s how tastee treats was born. then I realized that if I could treat my brother with medicines from this plant that I prepare myself, there are many other people in the world I can help with this.”
what’s different about the bamboo coffee cannabis experience?
tastee brand move to new york was to “familiarize new yorkers with the brand and d.c. approach to cannabis”, said the founder. inspired by d.c. fantasy culture of gifting, bamboo incorporates comic book-style cartoon bears into its packaging: different varieties of classic bamboo, black bamboo, gold bamboo, lato bamboo, and the latest white bamboo are designed in association with subsidiary brand runtz ® joke’s up, with the goal of putting a smile on consumers’ faces from the moment they walk into the gift shop. The gift shop also offers CBD tinctures (citrus mint provides an invigorating sense of focus and wakefulness). Cuter cartoon bears also appear in the form of special jars, giving new meaning to the term “stuffed animals.”
It is within the game room/shop that the bamboo founder’s intelligence becomes clearer. he pointed out the unique hvac system that is only visible in this part of the space, but works throughout the loft.
“it allows for a cleaner space and better quality air,” said the founder. “The smoke is ventilated at all times. so no matter where in our place you turn on, you will breathe easier. safety first!”

entertainers at heart, the bamboo team included space for a recording studio at the rear of the venue. artists can record and mix tracks here; it’s a safe space for them to get into the creative zone with their favorite cannabis. music and cannabis are intimately related, and of the guests who appeared during the bamboo café’s first official open night, many identified as artists and music producers.
bamboo is truly a place for night owls, a fact confirmed when the steel band steel x plosion came through the doors at 11 p.m. Led by world famous steel drummer Freddy Harris 3, the band is aptly named for its ability to make a room resonate with thumping melodies. Using a mix of steel drums and other percussion instruments, Steel x Plosion added another dimension to the Bamboo Cafe’s tiki bar atmosphere, one of exuberant pride. once they started playing their island-tinged instrumentals, the entire crowd swayed to the beat.
interestingly, it is thanks to the harris that bamboo coffee exists. he is the same brother whom the founder of the company started dealing with cannabis edibles. Beaming, the brothers recounted how early experiments with Tastee’s candy helped Harris regulate his sleep cycle and control other symptoms of his epilepsy, as well as reduce his chance of having seizures.
“She completely changed my life,” Harris said of her sister.

Numerous studies have found cannabis to be effective, particularly cannabis oil, in treating the symptoms of epilepsy. Even the first FDA-recommended cannabinoid drug, Epidiolex, was approved for this purpose alone.
According to the founder, when Harris strictly took prescription medication for his epilepsy, he experienced side effects such as lightheadedness, mood swings, and hair loss. worse yet, he says his brother “can’t create” when he takes only these drugs. on a cannabinoid regimen using his tinctures, he experiences none of these side effects.
“With the color in the right [regime], she has no side effects and her hair has grown back and she can create,” reports the founder. She points out that most of Harris’s epilepsy seizures occur while she sleeps, and his cannabis tinctures relax her nerves to improve sleep, severely reducing the likelihood of having a seizure.
“His epilepsy is not completely cured because he still has [seizures] from time to time,” he adds. “If she doesn’t take the tinctures regularly, she will get inflamed.”

2022 will be a great year for the bamboo team. In addition to the excitement surrounding the cafe’s launch, the founder will also host a live streamed podcast, Taste Talks. Despite the rise of Omicron disrupting the daily operations of New York’s event venues and clubs, all hands are ready to work to apply for a coveted Social Equity license. They already have a demonstrable advantage, having been licensed in Washington, D.C., and heritage market experience from New York (they hosted the city’s first craft cannabis competition), combined with the business acumen and compassion of the founder, will surely make bamboo an industry standout.
Like the plant that gives it its name, bamboo coffee has seen its seeds planted and tenderly cared for, while waiting for the right moment to grow. now is the time for those buds to sprout, bringing wellness, happiness, and indomitable energy. happy year of the bamboo.
