tasseography is a divination method that interprets patterns in tea leaves, coffee grounds, and even wine sediments. For centuries, the art of reading Turkish ground coffee has been a tradition in countries that prefer Turkish coffee (not just turkey). Some people read Turkish coffee grounds for serious results, others read them just for fun. Either way, it’s a great way to immerse yourself in another culture and enjoy some delicious coffee.
this is what you will need:
- j.l. Hufford’s Best Turkish Blend Coffee is the best, but you can use any blend you like (use code coffee10 to save 10% when you shop from our extensive collection of coffee beans).
- a white cup and saucer: we recommend the notneutral linen latte cup and saucer for this.
- a traditional Turkish coffee pot.
- The coffee should be well blended so that no chunks dilute the ground coffee. you can read our blog post on how to make the best Turkish coffee for more details.
- feel free to add an extra tablespoon of coffee powder for more ground coffee.
- should not read its own arguments, as it is probably biased. however, you can read your own as a practice for visualizing symbols.
- always start from the cup handle. it moves from right to left if the person is right-handed or from left to right if they are left-handed.
- be sure to sip from the same side and drink casually. no need to rush.
- leave a small amount in the cup, about a sip’s worth, and swirl to loosen sediment.
- Take the last sip, then make a wish.
- Place the saucer on top of the cup (face up) to cover it. be sure to seal it very well.
- Hold the set of coffee cups in your hands in front of you, at chest level.
- make 3 horizontal circles in a clockwise direction. your goal is to move the sediment and spread it evenly across the entire interior surface of the bowl.
- Turns the coffee cup upside down (flip) in one quick motion. this action will bring the sediment to the saucer, leaving the necessary patterns that a coffee reader needs.
- The reader leaves the glass for 5-10 minutes to completely drain and cool. the sediments will slowly slide off the saucer and create the final patterns within the cup.
- If you prefer to investigate relationships, place a ring on the back surface of the cup.
- if the reading session is about money, then you should put a coin on the back surface of the glass.
- the reader returns to you whatever object you put in the cup. then gently separate the cup from the saucer.
- If a large piece of earth falls on the saucer, it means that any of your problems or worries will soon be gone.
- If the fallen soil forms a pile, it means the money will come to you.
- If the cup and saucer are pressed together and the reader can pick them up as a single unit, it is a prophet’s cup. this means that you do not need to continue reading because all your readings will come true. most people continue reading anyway, for fun.
- the coffee reader flips the cup and holds it upright. the shapes inside the cup and saucer will constitute some meanings that deserve explanation
-
Dividing into five sections is the most common way to divide the cup, but whatever feels natural and instinctive is also best.
-
handle side (left or right depending on which hand it was held in) = events related to love life

-
front edge side (the side opposite the handle) = financial and wealth related matters

cup bottom (container) = home life and family affairs
-
top edge (top edge between handle and “front” edge) = present life
-
bottom edge (bottom side between handle and “front” edge = afterlife
reading the symbols:
- The reading of symbols depends largely on the interpretation and instinct of the reader.
- if you recognize an image on the mug, what is your intuition about it? if it looks like a symbol you know, what is commonly associated with that symbol?
- here is a list of common symbols in tasseography, but again, the reading is highly dependent on the reader’s gut reaction and interpretation.
