13 Cool Coffee Shops in NYC

When I moved to New York, one of the things I was most excited about was trying a bunch of different coffee shops. two months after moving here i’m happy to say i came across some really cool coffee shops in new york. so let’s dive right in, starting with the bird and the branch.

1. bird and branch

try the blackbird, and that’s the only coffee drink you’ll be thinking about for a while.

my favorite drink at bird and branch, the blackbird, is a latte with espresso, blackberries, thyme and homemade macadamia almond milk. the drink will take you on a rollercoaster ride with its mix of bitter, sour, sweet, nutty, and herbal flavors.

but that drink wasn’t actually the first thing that made me fall in love with this new york coffee shop. the first thing i noticed was that they use cafe saint frank, which is one of my favorite coffee roasting companies based in san francisco. So am I biased because of that? maybe. still, try the blackbird if you go!

2. rare fox coffee

:: brooklyn::

984 manhattan ave, brooklyn, new york 11222

website | howl | instagram

stumbled across the odd fox cafe while wandering around greenpoint, brooklyn. The exterior of the store was the first thing that caught my eye, but the interior was what made me stay. I love the whimsical atmosphere that the space creates. the personality of the cafeteria really shines through the decoration.

As a bonus, the coffee was delicious too!

3. coffee of yesteryear

:: hudson yards ::

455 West 34th Street, New York, NY 10001

I had my doubts about this place before visiting it. I wasn’t sure an “old country” style coffee shop was what I was looking for in any coffee shop. so when I sat in their outdoor seating area, I was pleasantly surprised at the friendly atmosphere that the owners of the cafe have created for their guests.

I loved the vines that drooped from the poles in their outdoor seating area. and the iced latte I bought helped keep me alert for the rest of the day.

4. urban backyard

:: nolita ::

180 mulberry st, new york, ny 10012

The urban backyard is the definition of a cute cafe! The New York Cafe is located on a busy corner next to Little Italy and Chinatown. Although the space is small, the store front is so welcoming that it’s hard to miss the place.

I remember being impressed by their coffee, but even more impressed by the craftsmanship of their desert. the little plant-shaped cupcakes looked too cute to eat.

5. % arabica

kyoto-based % arabic coffee shop opened its first coffee shop in the us. uu. location in June 2021. and my goodness the owner couldn’t have picked a better location for this trendy cafe! the cafe is located in dumbo, brooklyn, and there is a large arched window that offers a close-up view of the brooklyn bridge.

I’m often hesitant to visit chain coffee shops because it’s so hard to maintain consistent quality across stores. however, my first impression of % Arabica was good. His Spanish latte especially made an impression.

Traveller Tip: This place often gets crowded and has a long line. go in the late afternoon if you want to avoid the crowd!

6. 787 coffee

:: upper east side ::

228 E 80th St, New York, NY 10075

website | howl | instagram

787 Coffee grows its own coffee beans in Puerto Rico and brews fresh coffee at one of its 10 New York City locations! I’ve been a farm-to-cup-of-coffee fan since I visited my first farm-to-cup of coffee, Pachamama, in Sacramento.

The idea of farm to cup is that 1) you get the freshest beans possible and 2) the farmers get paid more since there is no middleman or distributor taking a cut from the farmers.

I was so glad I discovered the upper east side location of 787 coffee. I know it will become one of my favorite coffee shops in New York.

7. grumpy coffee

:: lower east side ::

13 essex street, new york, ny 10002

website | howl | instagram

I stumbled upon cafe grumpy after a yoga class at the immersive van gogh exhibit. the cafe has a couple of different locations in new york, and the one i visited was in a quieter part of the lower east side.

As you enter the store, you are greeted by a friendly barista. there’s also a neon sign hanging directly to your right against the brick wall. it’s shaped like the cafe grumpy logo, a grumpy looking face, hard to miss!

Based on the way customers interacted with the barista, I could tell this cafe is frequented by locals. As an added bonus, this NYC coffee shop is just a few blocks from two bridges, a scenic spot where you can see the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges converging in the distance.

8. bibble & sip

:: city center ::

253 w 51st st, new york, ny 10019

website | howl | instagram

bible & yep is for baker lovers, matcha drinkers and people who need a boost on their instagram page 😛 this coffee shop and bakery has two locations, and the one I frequent is downtown on 51st and 8th.

my favorite things to get here are the earl gray cream puff pastry and the matcha latte. Their cakes are also super adorable and I know I’ll keep coming back until I try everything on their menu.

9. remi flower & coffee

remi is like a dream come true for lovers of coffee and flowers. when you walk in you immediately realize it’s a coffee shop because there are wooden tables everywhere and people working on their laptops. however, after sitting there for a while, he begins to wonder if he has teleported into someone’s backyard and is spending the afternoon in his garden.

many people also come to remi because of how beautiful their drinks are. imagine blue, purple and pink lattes. I tried the butterfly pea latte when I went and I have to say it wasn’t the best tasting latte I’ve ever had, but the aesthetic presentation made it very enjoyable.

10. espresso friesson

I love an unassuming coffee shop with simply delicious coffee. i visited frisson on a rainy day when my mother was in town. We each ordered a cappuccino, one with almond milk and one with soy milk. My mom is a long-time latte drinker, and I think I turned her into a cappuccino drinker that day! That’s how rich she was!

In addition to the coffee, the space is also super cozy, and I loved sitting there and chatting with my mom like we had all the time in the world.

11. sey coffee

:: brooklyn::

website | howl | instagram

sey coffee has one of the most beautiful spaces to enjoy coffee! it is bright, woody and full of plants. If they told me they were going to start selling plants one day, I wouldn’t even be surprised.

As a bonus, their coffee is delicious, too.

My only complaint is that the cafe is pretty far into Brooklyn, so it takes a while to get there. but maybe the place felt more serene because of how quiet the neighborhood was as well.

12. devotion

:: williamsburg, brooklyn ::

website | howl | instagram

Whenever I have friends in town, Devotion (the Williamsburg location) is often on my list of places to visit. the space is really cool with a large plant installation on the back wall and a skylight that allows a lot of light to spill into the space. there’s also a nice leather sofa right in the center of it all, which is the perfect place to catch up with friends.

new york coffee shop prides itself on its fresh beans and the cold brew is definitely something you’ll want to try when you stop here.

13. teahouse mirror

:: brooklyn::

website | howl | instagram

mirror in the woods (also called mirror tea house) is a cafe, restaurant and event venue. It’s one of the most New York experiences you could have while visiting New York, so I recommend it to everyone!

I visited in May 2021 and due to covid restrictions they only had outdoor seating. I tried their matcha with banana milk, and it’s still one of the most unique drinks I’ve had in the city. I can’t wait to go back when their live performances and events come back.

coffee shops in new york city: an ongoing exploration

Needless to say, I’ve been to several coffee shops in New York City. somehow, it feels like it’s only scratched the surface. some places that are on my list are think coffee, st kilda coffee and black fox coffee. once I’ve visited these places too, I’ll be sure to let you know!

what’s on your list of new york coffee shops to visit?
