Dearly, departed Restaurants: Charlie’s Cafe Exceptionale

Who else could we kick off our Classics Week power hour than the restaurant with the spectacular potato salad, which set the bar for service and inspired our own food awards? Charlie’s Outstanding Cafe was located at South 7th Street and 4th Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. the restaurant served us for 49 years until the doors closed for good in July 1982.

originally, the restaurant was to be run by not one, but two charlies. Charles Saunders had teamed up with Charles “The Finn” Herlin, an influential bartender. Herlin created the “el presidente” cocktail (a mix of orange, lemon, and gin finished with a dash of grenadine). sadly, herlin passed away shortly after he opened the restaurant. Saunders would remain the boss of the cafe until his death.

The oak-paneled dining room greeted generations with a once-sophisticated menu that included a potato salad so wonderful that the recipe remains highly sought after and is now served at awards honoring the restaurant. During its heyday, potato salad was served free at happy hour, which may add to fond memories in addition to the potato medley, hard-boiled eggs, spicy green onions, and creamy dressing.

For celebrities visiting the twin cities, a meal inside Charlie’s was a must: Bob Hope, Jack Dempsey, President Richard Nixon all dined inside. However, the celebrity who was perhaps most celebrated at Charlie’s was noted local newspaper columnist and radio personality, Cedric Adams. Adams was remembered inside Charlie’s with his own sandwich named after him. (Sliced ​​young capon was sautéed with creamy mushrooms and served on toast.)

charlie died of a heart attack in 1962 and his wife louise took over the restaurant. Louise was a formidable lady who had been a speed skater, avid golfer, and had the distinction of being one of the first women to become a partner in a law firm within the Twin Cities. she served charlie’s all the way by serving as she put it, “beer, bourbon and beef.”

as the downtown and dining landscape changed in the 1980s, louise saunders made the difficult decision to close the restaurant. she turned down the developers’ offer to reopen the restaurant inside the glass skyscraper that towered over the address. She reportedly preferred people to remember Charlie’s as it was.

Somewhere, well-known local restaurateur John Rimarcik (owner of several historic Minneapolis restaurants, including Monte Carlo) owns Charlie’s Bar. the naked nymph that was outside the restaurant (and before the foshay tower) now dances in a private house.
