6 of the Best Coffee Shops in Florence (2022 Edition)

a new cultural renaissance is brewing in florence, but it doesn’t involve art or politics. but it does imply culture, in this case, the culture of coffee. Read on to learn about the 21st century coffee revolution in Florence and where to have the best coffee in Florence.

in 2014, ditta artiginale began serving lightly roasted single origin coffee in the heart of florence. Although we had heard rumors about this development, we didn’t believe it until we saw and tried the roaster’s arabica beans for ourselves in 2018.

although we were only in town for one day as part of a collaboration with cesarine, we did take an early morning coffee break. after a few sips of our expertly crafted flat egg whites that we paired with excellent cornetti, we were believers. we were also well caffeinated.

Fast forward to the present and ditta artiginale is still going strong. Florence’s third wave coffee pioneer now has locations on both sides of the Arno and it’s not alone. both the d612 coffee roasters and the gearbox coffee roasters are roasting excellent coffee that foodies can drink and purchase at select cafes in florence.

the question is no longer if florence has modern coffee in some of its cafes. instead, it’s where you can find great land from a single source.

elephant in the roomwe’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that starbucks opened its first location in florence in april 2021. the global cafe is located at i gigli campi bisenzio, about a half hour drive from the city center of florence.

our favorite coffees from florence for specialty coffee

spending a week in florence was enough time for us to find and drink the best coffee in town between meals. In other words, we ate a lot of great food in Florence and drank a lot of great coffee.

If you’re wondering where you can get the best coffee, wonder no more. these are our favorite places for espresso drinks and pour overs in florence:

1. ditta artigianale

Given that it single-handedly transformed Florence’s coffee culture when it opened in 2014, it’s fair to call ditta artiginale a renaissance coffee company. the company’s impact is nothing short of revolutionary in a country that has been drinking a certain style of dark roast coffee for centuries.

We can only imagine the reaction coffee received when it introduced a menu that included traditional coffee (ie espresso) and modern pour-overs. How many euros does a cup of coffee cost??? but almost a decade later, the city that embraced michelangelo’s david has done the same with ditta artiginale and its list of modern coffee drinks.

the owners of ditta artiginale pride themselves on being different. Part of this difference involves roasting single-origin beans sourced from independent coffee growers around the world. another difference is the hipster atmosphere of the cafe in a friendly space located a few blocks from the majestic duomo of florence.

That’s great, but how’s the coffee? In a word, it is solid. We’ve enjoyed drinking coffee from Ditta Artiginale in Florence, as well as Ventimetriquadri in Naples and Italala Caffè in Vilnius.

updatethe ditta artiginale team has been busy since the pandemic ended. They opened a third cafe with a coffee school in the Sant’Ambrogio district in July 2021.

following the world handbook of specialty coffee, ditta artiginale offers menu items such as flat white, matcha lattes, cold beers and avocado toast. but the menu also embraces its Italian heritage with items like chilled shakerato drinks and colorful caprese salads topped with creamy burrata.

And then there’s ditta artiginale’s selection of Italian pastries. We can’t think of a better way to start a day in Florence than with a beautiful cornetto or bomboloni paired with a matching flat white.

2. melaleuca

it makes sense that our favorite florence coffee shop has ties to both america and australia. after all, these two countries are leaders in the third wave coffee movement.

But make no mistake: this is not a generic coffee shop. instead, melaleuca, located in santa croce, a few steps from the arno, represents the new florence. As it happens, married owners Marco Cappelliari and Chloe Guest spent their formative years in Gainesville, Florida (USA) and Cairns, Australia before settling in Cappelliari’s hometown of Florence and opening Melaleuca in 2019.

The enthusiastic duo brings the best of American and Australian coffee culture to their Italian coffee. this cultural fusion includes American cinnamon buns, Australian latte art and locally sourced coffee beans. During our multiple visits, the cafeteria served beans from the local d612 roaster.

ironically, the beans are the main reason we visit melaleuca’s. the name of the cafe came up while we were looking for where to drink d612 coffee in florence. and that first visit to the was not the last. After enjoying an outrageously tasty cinnamon bun and two skillfully prepared flat whites, we return a few days later.

pro tipadventurous coffee drinkers will want to order magics at melaleuca. Invented in Melbourne, the Australian drink is essentially a double macchiato.

brunch was in order during our second visit to melaleuca and not just because the cafeteria didn’t have cinnamon buns. our main goal was to enjoy an American-style brunch that included pancakes and nduja chili eggs stacked on flatbread.

3. symbiosi organic coffee & lovely bistro

while simbiosi offers a varied menu that includes food and cocktails, we specifically sought out coffee for its menu of locally roasted coffee. the coffee shop was serving a selection of d612 coffee at the time of our visit.

During that visit, Simbiosi’s coffee list was short with just nine items. but those nine items included all of our favorites, including cappuccinos, flat whites, and cold beers. we chose flat white in our search for a creamy joe shake.

Drinking those flat whites was a respite from a week of intense food travel. Simbiosi’s atmosphere felt completely out of place while the coffee was as good as the cups we’ve enjoyed in cities like Cape Town and Portland. but, at that time, there was no other place we would have preferred to be.

4. coffee mantra

We initially walked past the cafe mantra in our haste to get to the mercato di sant’ambrogio. That was a mistake we corrected once we realized that a coffee shop jewelery box is the best place to drink locally roasted gearbox coffee in Florence.

located in borgo san lorenzo, gearbox is one of three excellent coffee roasters in florence. the others are ditta artiginale and d612. At the time of our most recent visit to Florence, Coffee Mantra was the only cafe in Florence that served coffee beans.

After drinking classic cappuccinos made with ultra-fresh milk during our initial visit, we decided to try the milk-free filter coffee a second time. It was a good decision and one that we will probably repeat when we return to Florence.

5. coffee plane

Although Torrefazione Piansa has been roasting coffee beans since the 1980s, the roaster officially joined Florence’s specialty coffee scene when it opened Caffè Piansa in 2016. When we visited Florence four years later, the cafe was operating as a well-oiled coffee machine with its original barista still making espressos and pour overs.

Unlike other Florentine roasters, Piansa combines beans in blends ranging from equal amounts of Arabica and Robusta beans to 100% Arabica. The roasting operation obtains its beans from countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Kenya.

although you can try the piansa beans in other cafes in florence, it is best to visit the exclusive cafe in the beccaria neighborhood of the city, east of the city center. we completed this mission on our last day in florence.

Tempted by a box full of paninis and cornettos, we saved our appetites and simply ordered filtered coffee. coffee offers chemex and v60 extraction methods. we opt for the latter. it was a good choice.

6. ditta artigianale oltrarno

our journey to explore florence’s coffee scene came full circle when we crossed the arno. this is where we find ditta artigianale oltrarno, the second location opened by the city’s original specialty coffee shop.

You may be wondering why we gave this store a separate entry, since it has the same owners and a similar menu as the original ditta artiginale. let’s explain…
